When you open SoapCalc you will see there are 7 ‘steps’ across the top menu. We begin in the Preferences step.
Lye Type & Purity
Sodium hydroxide is what we use for making cold process soap, and this is selected by default. Let’s leave this as is. Purity is set to 100% by default. Generally, the tub of lye you buy will have the purity on the front. For example, the Bondall Caustic Soda from Bunnings is 98% Sodium Hydroxide, so I would change from 100% to 98% when using that lye.
*Sodium hydroxide has the scientific name of NaOH, and is commonly called lye or caustic soda, so whenever you see any of those, they are the same thing.

Masterbatching:
Masterbatching is a way of calculating how much of your masterbatch solution and how much extra liquid you’ll need for the recipe you are calculating. For now, we will leave this unselected. To view a tutorial for calculating a masterbatched recipe, click here.
